U.S. Census Bureau estimates show that America’s older population is expanding as numbers in younger age brackets decline. Between 2020 and 2024, the count of Americans 65 and older rose 13%, while the share under 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the past century, the nation’s elderly population surged from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 analysis indicates that nearly one in two people in this age category, or about 28 million adults, could need long-term services and support, with forecasts suggesting over a third might eventually require nursing facility care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
