State Senator Joan Ballweg | Wisconsin State Legislature

State Senator Joan Ballweg of Wisconsin has been working tirelessly to support the health and well-being of moms and babies in the state. As a member of the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board and the Co-Chair of the Wisconsin Legislative Children's Caucus, Senator Ballweg has authored legislation that aims to provide better healthcare coverage and support for new mothers.

One of the bills she has authored, Senate Bill 110, has already been passed by the Wisconsin State Senate with bipartisan support. This bill expands Medicaid coverage to new moms for a year after they give birth, ensuring that they receive the same coverage provided to babies. This is crucial as many health concerns, such as postpartum depression and hypertension, can arise during pregnancy or in the months following childbirth. By keeping moms healthy, we are also ensuring the well-being of their babies.

Senator Ballweg's efforts have not gone unnoticed, as 45 groups, including the American Heart Association and the March of Dimes, have expressed their support for Senate Bill 110. In an interview with WKOW-27 News, Senator Ballweg discussed the importance of expanding postpartum Medicaid coverage to moms for up to a year after birth. The interview will be aired on Capital City Sunday program on December 3rd.

In addition to her work on healthcare legislation, Senator Ballweg has also proposed updates to Wisconsin's Safe Haven Law. This law allows new parents who are unable or unwilling to care for their newborn to anonymously surrender the baby at a safe facility. Senator Ballweg's proposal, Senate Bill 369, would allow local hospitals, fire stations, or law enforcement agencies to install newborn infant safety devices, also known as Baby Boxes. These temperature-controlled and ventilated boxes are equipped with a dual alarm system and are under 24/7 surveillance, ensuring the safety of the surrendered babies.

These legislative initiatives are just a few examples of Senator Ballweg's dedication to the well-being of Wisconsin families and children. Her efforts have garnered support from both legislators and organizations, all recognizing the importance of providing the necessary support and healthcare to moms and babies.

In addition to her legislative work, Senator Ballweg is also involved in local events happening in Wisconsin. The Annual Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, held on December 1st, will feature a 30-foot Balsam Fir tree from Rhinelander, Wisconsin. The tree, planted in 2005 as a memorial to a World War II Army veteran, will be adorned with handmade ornaments donated by schools from across the state.

There are also various local events happening throughout Wisconsin, ranging from holiday celebrations to craft fairs. These events provide an opportunity for the community to come together and enjoy the festive season.

As Senator Ballweg continues her work in the Wisconsin State Legislature, she remains committed to advocating for the well-being of moms and babies. Her efforts to expand healthcare coverage and improve the Safe Haven Law are commendable, and her dedication to serving the community is evident in her involvement in local events. Wisconsin families and children can rest assured knowing that they have a champion in Senator Joan Ballweg.
