The Vernon County Erlandson Office building in Viroqua will be closed to the public on March 13 due to scheduled electrical maintenance, according to a county announcement. The closure is intended to allow facilities staff and contracted electricians to safely complete planned work on the building’s backup generator systems.
The temporary closure affects several county departments, including Human Services, Health, Zoning and Sanitation, UW-Extension, and the Coroner. During this period, staff from these departments will continue providing services from the Courthouse Annex at 400 Courthouse Square. Residents may experience minor adjustments in service delivery but are encouraged to check the county website or contact departments directly for information about accessing services during the closure.
Normal operations at the Erlandson Office Building are expected to resume on Monday, March 16 at 8:30 a.m. The county has asked for patience and understanding from community members while maintenance is completed.
Vernon County schools have seen changes in student demographics over recent years. The top three schools with the highest enrollment for the 2023-24 school year were Viroqua High School with 301 students, Westby High School with 297 students, and Westby Middle School with 294 students, according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. In that same year, white students made up 92.2% (3,384) of the student body in Vernon County compared to 93% (3,479) in the previous school year as reported by the department.
Of the total 3,672 students attending Vernon County schools during the current school year, smaller ethnic groups together comprised about 7.8% (286) of enrollment according to state data. Hispanic students were identified as the second most represented ethnic group at 3.3%, followed by multiracial students also at 3.3%. Pacific Islander students made up just 0.1% of enrolled students according to state figures.
Community members can expect regular operations at county offices following completion of maintenance work.
