Senator Joan Ballweg Wraps Up Legislative Session with Success

State Senator Joan Ballweg concluded the 2023-24 legislative session in Wisconsin with numerous accomplishments and bills signed into law. Speaking on the completion of the session, Senator Ballweg expressed her excitement over the progress made, stating, "I am excited to say that we have accomplished much." Reflecting on her legislative achievements, Senator Ballweg shared, "As of January 1, 2024, I had eight bills signed into law. After the conclusion of the Senate’s floor period, I now have 22 additional bills awaiting action by the governor."

One of the significant bills signed into law was Senator Ballweg's kinship care bill, which expanded the state's kinship care program to include 'like-kin'. Upon the bill's signing, Senator Ballweg remarked, "I am proud to have this bill signed into law," highlighting its impact on teens in need of guardianship and Native American children.

The legislation defines like-kin as individuals who have a significant emotional connection with a child or the child’s family, similar to a familial relationship. Senator Ballweg's dedication to supporting children and families in the state was evident through her work on this legislation, building upon her efforts in the Wisconsin State Budget.

In addition to her legislative accomplishments, Senator Ballweg welcomed 2024 Senate Scholar Alyssa Durrant to the Wisconsin State Senate, emphasizing the importance of educational programs like the Senate Scholar initiative. Reflecting on the meeting with Alyssa, Senator Ballweg expressed, "I enjoyed meeting with Alyssa at the Capitol," highlighting the value of such programs for students to experience the legislative process firsthand.

As the legislative session concluded, Senator Ballweg encouraged high school seniors with exceptional leadership skills in the 14th Senate District to apply for the Joan Ballweg Leadership Scholarship, reinforcing her commitment to fostering leadership among young individuals.

Senator Ballweg also highlighted upcoming local events, including the New Dublin Irish Fest, Euchre Club, and Portage Area Job Fair, showcasing her engagement with the community beyond legislative responsibilities.
