When the last glacier retreated from Baraboo, Wisconsin, around 12,000 years ago, it left behind several notable features that have become key attractions in the area. The melting glacier reshaped the landscape by shifting stone and sand, resulting in the formation of Devil’s Lake. This lake and its surrounding 500-foot quartzite bluffs are now part of Devil’s Lake State Park. Known for its wildlife and recreational opportunities, the park is Wisconsin's most-visited state park.
Additionally, the receding glacier gave rise to a brook that evolved into what is now known as the Baraboo River. This riverbank was where the Ringling Brothers founded their renowned circus, famously dubbed "the Greatest Show on Earth." Presently, this historical site hosts Circus World, which features shows under a big top twice daily.
Adjacent to Circus World is Driftless Glen Distillery. The distillery utilizes the river’s clean waters to produce craft whiskey, bourbon, gin, and vodka that have garnered numerous awards. Visitors can also enjoy an on-site restaurant offering unique cocktails paired with dishes like steak and seafood.
Baraboo offers various outdoor activities such as paddling along the Baraboo River—celebrated as America’s longest restored free-flowing river—and hiking along the Ice Age Trail. These experiences often leave visitors eager to sample local cuisine and beverages.
The attractions in Baraboo present a mix of natural beauty and cultural history that invites exploration over a weekend visit. From outdoor adventures to circus performances and culinary delights, these features are remnants of glacial activity thousands of years ago.
