On October 7, 2025, at 2:31 a.m., a deputy from the Sauk County Sheriff's Department observed a vehicle in the Village of West Baraboo. The officer checked the registration and found that the owner’s driving privileges had been revoked due to previous Operating While Under the Influence (OWI) offenses. This prompted a traffic stop.

The driver was identified as Merritt A. Parks, age 70, from Baraboo. According to the department, "While speaking with Merritt the Deputy observed signs of intoxication via narcotics. Merritt consented to Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and signs of impairment were observed." The statement continued, "Merritt was arrested for Operating While Impaired. A search incident to arrest of the vehicle yielded items pertaining to drug use. It was learned Merritt had 7 prior Operating While Intoxicated Offenses."

Parks was taken to Sauk County Jail on charges including Operating While Revoked, Operating While Intoxicated (8th offense), and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
