A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Town of Freedom, Wisconsin, regarding new voter registrations on November 7, 2024. The request was made by us at SW Wisconsin News, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The specific request was for a list of new voters who registered to vote on November 5, 2024. As a news organization, we believe in the importance of access to public records in fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
We also noted that as members of the media involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals under the Wisconsin Open Records Law, §19.31 et seq.
Our mission at SW Wisconsin News is to ensure that our audience has access to accurate and timely information about their local government. This includes information about new voter registrations which can provide insight into voter participation and engagement within our community.
