In Richland Center, Wisconsin, The Richland Hospital and Clinics (TRHC) is observing National Nutrition Month in March 2025 by offering practical advice to promote healthier eating habits. This year's theme, "Food Connects Us," encourages individuals to make mindful food choices even when dining out.
Clinical Dietitians Ty Mulholland, Grace Denman, and Lindsey Hatfield are leading the initiative. Mulholland emphasizes that dining out does not have to derail health goals: “Even small changes can make an impact.” The team has shared several recommendations from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for making healthier choices while eating at restaurants.
The tips include planning your meals throughout the day by opting for lighter breakfast and lunch if a special dinner is planned. When ordering, look for cooking methods such as baked, braised, broiled, grilled, poached, roasted, and steamed as they tend to be healthier options. It is advised to avoid or limit foods described as batter-fried, pan-fried, buttered, creamed, crispy, or breaded.
Other suggestions include asking for bread or chips to be served with the meal rather than before it to prevent overeating. Starting with a soup or leafy green salad can help incorporate more vegetables into your diet. Additionally, choosing a salad with grilled chicken or seafood as a main course is recommended.
Throughout March, TRHC will share more dietary tips on their Facebook and Instagram pages provided by their Clinical Dietitian team.
