The Richland Hospital and Clinics in Richland Center, Wisconsin, recently hosted a hands-on educational program called “Club Scrub” for 21 area middle school students interested in health care careers. The event took place on August 27 and was directed by Sarah Stibbe, administrative assistant and volunteer coordinator.

According to Stibbe, the initiative is designed to introduce students from grades 6 through 8 to various health care professions. “Students had the chance to work directly with professionals from all areas of the hospital, such as doctors, nurses, and pharmacy technicians, in a real clinical setting,” said Stibbe. “We welcomed students from Plain, Blue River, Prairie du Sac, Muscoda, Spring Green, Cazenovia, and Richland Center.” She noted that the program was supported in part by a Spark Good Local Grant from the Walmart Foundation.

During the session, students participated in activities within the Emergency Department where they observed demonstrations of life-saving techniques including tourniquet application, wound packing following “Stop the Bleed” protocols, intubation procedures, intraosseous (IO) drill demonstrations, and CPR using the Lucas Device. They also watched a live ultrasound demonstration and practiced suturing skills while learning about hygiene and safety measures for preventing infection. In addition to these experiences, students conducted blood typing experiments in the laboratory.

The Pharmacy department provided insights into both inpatient and retail settings. Students practiced IV simulation techniques and learned about medication safety by checking for errors and drawing up oral suspensions.

Stibbe expressed her support for programs like Club Scrub: “We’re proud to support programs like Club Scrub that inspire the next generation of health care heroes,” she said. “I think it was an unforgettable experience for everyone.”

Looking ahead, The Richland Hospital and Clinics will hold a Health Care Career Day for high school students on October 30 from 8:45 AM to 2 PM. Invitations have been sent to area schools for up to 30 participants. Parents are encouraged to have interested students contact their school advisors.

The Richland Hospital and Clinics has served residents of greater Richland County for over a century across three locations: its main center in Richland Center—which includes a clinic, pharmacy, and critical care—and rural clinics in Muscoda and Spring Green.
